John Strutt (1842-1919; ODNB), 3rd Baron Rayleigh; Cavendish professor of experimental physics, Cambridge, 1879-84; professor of natural philosophy, Royal Institution of Great Britain, 1887-1905; Nobel prize, 1904, for discovery of argon; his spiritual interests ranged from anglicanism to the Society for Psychical Research.
