George Gabriel Stokes (1819-1903; ODNB), physicist and mathematician; Lucasian professor, Cambridge, 1849-1903; 'the best-known conservatively religious scientist of the late Victorian age'; Gifford lecturer, Edinburgh, 1890-2; he has a memorial plaque in the north aisle of Westminster Abbey.
