Gilbert Keith Chesterton

Gilbert Chesterton (1874-1936; ODNB), journalist, writer, literary biographer, and prominent Christian apologist; arch critic of W.R. Inge - see 'The slime of the dragon', The Daily News, 18 Nov. 1911; in turn, the only individual whom Inge professed to 'hate', 'with all that he stands for' - Inge to C.F.G. Masterman, undated, Masterman Papers, Cadbury Library, Univ. of Birmingham, 11/6/2/7; received into the Roman Catholic Church, 1922; closely associated with Hilaire Belloc in the reaction against liberalism and parliamentary democracy in the early-twentieth century and in the Distributist movement during the interwar period; his many works of fiction and non-fiction included The Father Brown Stories (1911-36) and The Everlasting Man (1925).
