John Maynard Keynes

John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946; ODNB), economist, fellow of King's College, Cambridge, periodic civil servant, prolific commentator on public affairs, and patron of the arts; chief treasury representative at the Paris Peace Conference; his first book of note, The economic consequences of the peace (1919), was a bestseller, defying the expectations of the publisher; developed his theory of 'effective demand' as the key to economic stability in The general theory of employment, interest and money (1936), described by The Times as the most significant document since Adam Smith; Baron Keynes of Tilton, 1942.
