Durham Castle – Ordination Retreat

I finished the Charge for the Candidates. About 4 p.m. Lionel & I motored to Durham, & took up our quarters in the Castle.

The Church Papers say as little as possible about my pronouncement on Disestablishment. The Spectator has a note, mildly regretting it: and in the Times there is a brusque letter from Major Birchall expressing disagreement.

[struck through] I had interviews with the candidates:–

1. Herbert Frank Bishop (Oxford) Gospeller.

2. James William Samuel Capron (Oxford).

3. James Mabey Carr (Durham).

4. George Lamb (Durham).

5. William Aubrey Monsell Pike (Cambridge).

6. Allan Marat Ross (London).

Priests.

7. George Bailey, Literate

8. Nigel Edmund Cornwall (Oxford).

9. Harold Grayson (Leeds).

10. James Edward Talbot (Durham).

11. Michael Wilkinson (Oxford).

12. William Edward Wright (Durham).[end]
