Lionel and I motored to Durham, where I attended the service in the Cathedral organized in connexion with the annual reunion of the students of Bede College. It began with the formal placing of a wreath on Bede's tomb in the Galilee. The congregation, entirely composed of past & present students, numbered many hundreds, & the singing by so many male voices was most impressive. The Dean of Carlisle (Dr Stuart) preached an excellent sermon from the text "I am among you as he that serveth": & then I pronounced the Benediction from the Throne.
Lunch in the Drill Hall followed. I presided and proposed the toast of the College. Then I presided at a meeting of the College Committee, walked back to the Cathedral where the car awaited me, & so returned home. Shaddick came to see me at 6 p.m. Colonel and Mrs Marsh arrived on a short visit. Ella returned from London by the late train, and arrived in the Castle about 11.30 p.m.
