I left Park Lane after breakfast, and leaving my impedimenta at The Athenaeum, I walked to Westminster, and called on the Headmaster and the Dean, but to no purpose, as the one was in Jerusalem, and the other in Church. I travelled home by the 1.15 p.m. express, having Col. Thomlinson as my compagnon de voyage. He is a good fellow enough, but a trifle too didactic! At Darlington I was met by Fearne and the car: and by 6.40 p.m. I was dealing with the accumulated correspondence in my study. I received a letter from William: and also an effusion from 'Toujòurs paradise', i.e. Canon Partridge.
