I was confined to the house by my chill, and felt woeful. My guests betook themselves to High Force, which, by the recent rains, was in good form. Kirner, the Vicar of Stranton, came to lunch. He brought a plan of his parish in order to explain to me his proposed transference of the vicarage. Pemberton came to tea with his son–in–law, and Betty. I asked him whether a subscription of £100 to the Durham Castle would be thought too little from the Visitor of the University. He thought it would suffice.
