The two young men went off by the early train. It is difficult to realize that William has gone out of my life, and that probably I shall never see him again. How foolish it is to suffer one's self to depend in any measure on another in such a world as this!

At 11 a.m. I confirmed Mrs Ferguson, the doctor's wife, in the Chapel. After lunch Boden and I motored to Whitburn, & visited the C.L.B. camp. I had tea with Colonel Boden, and spoke to the boys. Then I called on Bailey, and discussed with him the case of woeful John: also I called on Wynne–Willson. Then we returned to Auckland.
