I wrote to the Archbishop of Canterbury; and paid the household accounts. Then I motored to Durham, & licensed 3 clergy. I lunched with Wilson, who had a friend, Arglas staying with him, who is a member of the National Assembly. I attended Evensong in the Cathedral before the Confirmation. There were 273 candidates, of whom nearly 2/3rds were female. Among the boys young May, the Sacrist's son, was confirmed. I returned to Auckland, and had an interview with Mr Hustler, the managing director of the Horden Collieries.
