Caröe arrived about 10.30 a.m., and went at once to his work. I wrote to Ella, Aleck Lawrence, & Iremonger: & then settled down to a sermon for Westminster Abbey. After lunch I played bowls with William, & read more of Bury's History, which is most interesting. His anti–Christian bias is, of course, very apparent, but it does not seem to deflect his historical judgment, and even the most devoted Christian must admit that Cyril & his contemporaries were an odious crew. It is interesting to note how he belittles the traditional importance of Alaric's sack of Rome, Stilicho's defence of the Empire, & the battle of Chalous. Gaiseric and Attila become far more respectable figures than has commonly been represented.
