The Civilian Candidate Test School at Knutsford was rejected by an overwhelming vote in spite of frenzied protests from Birchall & Hicks. Sir Henry Craik wrote a violent note protesting against my vote yesterday: I returned a peaceful answer! Then I had tea with mine hostess & came away by the 5.30 p.m. train from King's Cross. I was met at Darlington by Clayton & William. Much snow still lay on the ground. I relieved the tedium of the journey by reading through the translation of Ferrero's "The Ruin of Ancient Civilization & the Triumph of Christianity" – a melancholy & suggestive book.
