National Assembly all day. I made two speeches with something more than the usual success. Then I went to the House of Lords. Londonderry moved an amendment to the Address. He spoke well, & carried himself in a dignified manner. Ld Carson made an astonishing speech. His appearance, voice, & dramatick delivery gave extraordinary impressiveness to his sombre invective. Ld Gray spoke, haltingly & ineffectively: Birkenhead replied for the Government. He spoke with some heat, & made a better case than I had thought possible. With much hesitation I voted with the Government. The division was a close one 46 to 39.
