Wednesday, September 1st, 1920.

[A dull chilly day. Elizabeth went off by a train in the forenoon: and the Radfords followed at 12.50 p.m. These departures disturbed my morning's work, & but little work was done. In the afternoon a succession of callers, coming to say Goodbye, did as much for my work then: so that on the whole the day was frittered away. In the evening I read "Nicholas Nickleby" to Ella & Fearne in my study with a fire, which the coldness of the weather made acceptable.]
