Monday, August 16th, 1920.

Ella and I motored to Kentchurch, & lunched with Mr Joseph Shaw. He speaks with much confidence as to the probable result of another strike of the miners. The miners, in his belief, have made themselves so odious to the rest of the community, that they would command no popular sympathy if they came out on strike, & would speedily collapse. He doubts whether the railway men will come out in response to an appeal from the miners, & he is certain that the Transport workers will not. In any case, if a strike must come, the sooner it comes the better chance we have of defeating it.]
