I read Mason's catena of Anglican opinions on the subject of episcopacy, & so wasted the morning. After lunch Ella and I motored to Bridstow. Knight thinks the results of the Lambeth Conference are surprisingly good. Ernest arrived. Before going to bed I wrote several letters on Durham affairs. I set to work seriously on the collection of my staff of examining chaplains. The following three have accepted office.
1. Canon Cruickshank
2. Rev. S. K. Knight
3. Rev. A. Wynne Wilson
These two I have invited to join the list.
1. Rev. J. M. Creed
2. Canon Dawson Walker
[Bishop Moule had seven examining chaplains: of these I have retained one, Dawson Walker, and think of retaining another, de Labilliere. For the seventh chaplain I incline to take the bold course of appointing Moulsdale, the Principal of S. Chad Hostel. The man is a snaky Ritualist, & would be a spy in my camp: but, if he accepted office, he would to some extent be shackled, & he would have to maintain an outward appearance of loyalty for decency's sake! It would give the "Catholicks" an indication of my resolve to be fair to them; & would serve as a warning to the Evangelicals that their day was over. It would certainly be a venture, but might be worth making.]
