[Reading: Rashdall's Atonement.]

The Swedish lecture occupied me all the morning. In the afternoon I sawed wood with William. Ella and Ernest went to the Hunt Ball.

Before going to bed I read Gairdner's article on Cranmer in the Dict. of N.B. It is thoroughly unsympathetic, and throws into the foreground all, (and there was much,) in the Archbishop's career which was unworthy and dishonourable. But his immense services are belittled, and his enormous difficulties are unrecognized: nor are the excellences of his character, & the essential sincerity of his personal religion indicated. Gairdner's knowledge was spoiled by the pettiest prejudice.
