Saturday, December 20th, 1919.

I celebrated in the Chapel. The Archdeacon gave his 2nd address. At 10 a.m. I went to the Cathedral for the Dean's Installation. It was a dignified service, and the Dean's remarks were very suitable to the occasion. Then I lunched in the Town Hall with the Mayor, and made a short speech of welcome to the Dean. He replied in a pleasant speech which pleased the company. Knight and I walked for an hour. Then followed a service in chapel with another address by the Archdeacon. Then James came & administered the oaths &c. I added a few words to the effect that 'lawful authority' did not mean every man's own opinion.

After this the five candidates came to me separately, & I said what seemed to me required. Knight & Cruickshank had much conversation with them also, and, if good counsel could guarantee right behaviour, they ought to be exemplary clergyman. Finally, after Evensong in the Chapel, I gave them what it is now the fashion to call a 'charge', in which I referred specifically to some pitfalls which the life of a clergyman prepares for him.
