An untoward incident is reported this morning. During the night some miscreant has been in the garden, and worked havock on cucumbers, tomatoes, and flower–beds. Various half–witted youths are suspected.

In deference to the doctor I wired to Orleton cancelling my promise to preach on Sunday night, and then I wrote to the Lord Chamberlain to say that 'indisposition' had prevented me from attending the King's Garden Party this afternoon.

Godfrey with his daughter Antonia arrived before dinner. Wynne–Willson came & went through the correspondence.
