I called on the President of Magdalen in order to discuss the "Memoir". He has done something, but is not yet ready with his piece. After lunch Johnson took me to see the water–fowl, which he has collected in Mesopotamia – an interesting sight. Some of the eastern birds are fantastically beautiful. There came to dinner the Vice–Chancellor, the Omans, & Mr and Mrs Williams from S. Edmund's Hall. The V.C. gave me a full account of the strange conflict about patronage in one of the Malvern parishes, where the patron being a papist, the University has to appoint. It is an odd story.
