Much of my time was expended in seeing people – Bannister, Lilley, Frank James, and Wynne–Willson. I wrote some letters, and had more talk with Ernest, whose haziness as to plans & possibilities indicates an irresponsible disposition, rather disconcerting to an old cynic like me. I feel rather like Major Pendennis when he achieved his diplomatic master–piece at the expense of poor Pen's first love: but Ernest is a good deal more than 18: and I have no reason at all for assuming that this is his first love. Still it complicates the whole situation rather awkwardly.
