A tiresome day, with much pain & many visitors. Caröe arrived to inspect the Cathedral tower, which the Dean & Chapter propose to restore. A naval chaplain, Fortescue, came to see me about the parish of Leysters which he has been offered. He was ordained from St Augustine's College, Canterbury, under the Colonial Clergy Act, & is not therefore eligible for appointment to a parish in this diocese without my written consent. He struck me as rather bumptious. He has no better degree than the L.Th. of Durham, which is worthless; and he is just 30. Leysters contains 167 inhabitants! What could possibly befall a young clergyman in such a parish, but dege^ne^ration at best?
