I wrote some necessary letters, and made the requisite depositions for my absence; then I took my departure. My companion on the journey was Mrs Best, a very pleasant one. We parted at Paddington, where I took the tube to Trafalgar Square. The crowd was excessive, & the atmosphere asphyxiating. A bearded cleric, whom I did not recognize, announced himself as Canon Lacey of Worcester. He finds himself compelled to have the drains of his prebendal house renewed, & is for the nonce staying with old Canon Wilson, of whom he speaks with almost exaggerated enthusiasm. I dined at the Athenaeum, where I saw Oman and Lang.
