I wrote to Sanday explaining the circumstances in which the interchange of letters between the Archbishop & myself took place. I attended the funeral of Bishop Boyd Carpenter in Westminster Abbey. An urn containing his ashes was substituted for the coffin, & the burial service was used without alteration. I lunched with Ernest, & then went off to Paddington, where I caught the train to Hereford. My journey was relieved by the conversation of an Army doctor named Lloyd, who was home from the front on leave. He said that the hatred of the Germans among the French & Belgians whom they had lived upon was intense.
