Saturday, September 21st, 1918.

A cold cheerless day, relieved by a little sunshine in the forenoon; but ending in rain. I devoted the day to the Lecture, but with woefully little result.

The Bishop of Liverpool will not support my motion. He declares his personal belief in a conception of the episcopal office which is, I think, quite inconsistent with the history of the English Church: but he hardly seems to understand the point.
