1355th day

A brilliant morning, but still very cold. I was hard at work writing letters until lunch time. The Caröes arrived from Ludlow and lunched. After lunch we went to the Palace, where Caröe met the contractor Hodges & the local Sanitary Surveyor Prothero, and arranged with them what work needed to be done to the palatial drainage. Alban and I arranged books, and afterwards we all went into the Cathedral where the octogenarian verger, Moore, acted as our guide. I left the party in order to have an interview with the Editor of the Diocesan Messenger, a woeful little journal which is run at an annual loss to the Bishop of about £30! I ordered that until the war end, it be issued quarterly instead of bi–monthly. I presided at a meeting in the Institute adjoining St Peter's Church. The Mayor, the Dean, the Parochial Clergy, the Head of the local Police, & the ladies engaged in working the Munition Girls’ Clubs attended, and for 1 1/2 hours we had a lively discussion. On the whole, I think the meeting did good.
