1187th day

The post brought another newspaper–cutting – this time from Sheffield – appointing me to H___d [sic] !!! Budworth writes in a tone of alarm. I reminded him that, as the Italians say, "He that enters the Conclave a Pope, leaves it a Cardinal"! In the afternoon a letter from Pearce confirmed this view. He speaks as if the whole idea of sending me to the Bench had been definitely abandoned. This I interpret as meaning that the matter of the appointment has been decided, & that he has heard what the decision is, though he does not feel free to tell me what it is. I attended a meeting of the House Committee at Sherburn Hospital.
