1017th day

I turned my thoughts to the composition of a sermon for next Sunday evening, when I am pledged to preach at the dedication Festival of St Gabriel's, Sunderland. I meditate some reference to the Sabbatarian controversy, re–awakened by the egregious Horton. After lunch, I worked in the garden, & sawed off the main limbs of the holly tree, which over–shadowed perniciously the ground designed for growing vegetables. At tea–time Moulsdale came in, & coached me, for the Freemasons' Chapter tomorrow, when I am required to act as Junior Warden of my Lodge. It is truly humiliating to discover how extremely difficult it has become to commit anything to memory. The afternoon post brought me a very kind letter from Sir Henry Graham about the Warden. After dinner I wrote to Ernest Rudling, and Harold Knowling. Then I read about the Council of Basel to Ella.
