I dissipated my morning in various futilities e.g. completing & despatching the article on "Prohibition": writing at length to a foolish parson on the Sabbath question, because his foolish letter interested me: reading the very interesting preface to the Duke of Grafton's "Autobiography". Mrs Bell came to lunch. I worked on the potato–patch. George came to tea, & tidy up my room. I gave him "Peveril of the Peak". Then I wrote some letters.
