I went to the Cathedral at 8 a.m., and received the Holy Communion. Knowling was the celebrant. He omitted the "In excelsis" quite unconsciously. I attended Mattins, & spent the time until lunch in my weary view of the Anson papers. Then I worked after lunch for 2 hours in the potato–patch. Later I went to the Town Hall, and made a speech in aid of recruiting for the Volunteers. Then home to dinner, after which I read Creighton's History of the Papacy aloud to Ella.
