830th day

I sent the new little guide to Durham to Walter Jackson, with a letter to wish him good things on his Birthday. I finished the sermon for the Mayor's benefit, and attended Mattins & Evensong. Colonel Burdon came to tea, & discussed the possibility of some kind of service on the 3rd Dec: when General French is to inspect the Volunteers in Durham. He thinks very justly that it wd not be decent for 2500 men to spend Advent Sunday in Durham without some reminder of religion. The "Church Times" prints my letter under the heading "The Dean of Durham on Erastianism", and appends a comparatively civil note. The "Guardian" also prints my little letter on Gore's "Manual". The news form America makes it practically certain that Wilson has been reelected as President. The contest, however, is extremely close. It makes little difference to us, for it is now sufficiently apparent that in no circumstances will the Republic abandon the lucrative neutrality which she now enjoys.
