Such talk as I had with Pearce about matters ecclesiastical indicated that the wind blows steadily in the wrong direction at Lambeth, and perhaps at Downing Street. The Archbishop is now completely in the hands of the Talbot faction. But nothing of this kind really matters now. Pearce went off after lunch. Cruickshank returned. I dined with Meade–Falkner. He is a curiously evasive creature.
