24th Sunday after Trinity, November 14th, 1915.
468th day
I preached in Jesus College Chapel to the small company of dons & undergraduates now in residence. Then I lunched with Foakes–Jackson who introduced me to his wife. Burkitt & his wife were also present. From luncheon we went to Great St. Mary's where I preached to the University from the words: "Blessed is he whosoever shall find none occasion of stumbling in me". There were about 25 undergraduates in the Gallery, & the dons about half–filled the floor. I was told that it was an unusually large number for the "War" period. After the sermon, I walked & talked with Foakes Jackson for an hour: & then I went to S. John's, & had tea with old Dr Bonney, who had collected a party in my honour. F.J. and I dined in Trinity with Burkitt. In Hall I sate next J. J. Thompson: & in the Combination Room I found myself sitting beside Monsignor Barnes, who preceded me in the Incumbency of the Ilford Hospital. Afterwards we went to old Dr Jackson's rooms, & talked. I had some conversation with the redoubtable McTaggart. Cambridge looked superb in the moonlight as we walked back to Jesus. Then mine host, the Master, & I sate up talking until midnight.
