I left Durham by the 10.29 a.m. train, and travelled to Cambridge via York, March & Ely, arriving about 5.30 p.m. Col. & Mrs Darwin went with me as far as York. I went forthwith to the Lodge at Jesus College where I was hospitably received by the Master & Mrs Gray. I dined in Hall, and afterwards attended a meeting in Foakes–Jackson's rooms, at which Prof. Ridgway [sic] gave a racy address on "Free–spirits". He ranged far, & criticized Frazer's "Golden Bough" with much vigour & humour.
