464th day

The morning post brought a long & interesting letter from Dicey, in which he expressed himself very flatterously respecting my All Souls sermon, of which he had obtained the MS. from Arthur Johnson. He wrote about the War, & said some acute things about Asquith, whom he evidently distrusts. A consignment of the Huguenot sermons arrived from the publishers. I sent away 15 copies, & ordered 50 to be sent to M. Barnabas. I spent most part of the day in writing an article for the "Church Family Newspaper" criticizing Gore's conception of the Church of England. Also I attended Evensong. After dinner I read the Guildhall speeches aloud to my wife. A letter from Linetta, designed for my Birthday, reached me today. Fawkes sent me his Harvard Review article on "The Position & Prospects of the Roman Catholic Church" – an extremely interesting and well–informed discussion of a complicated subject.
