463rd day

I went to the Town Hall and witnessed the swearing in of the new Mayor (Alderman Gradon). A wonderful outflow of municipal oratory assured the world that the virtues & achievements of the out–going Mayor & Mayoress & the promise of their successor were something the like of which for goodness had never been seen on earth! Then I walked in procession to the Freemasons' Hall, & there listened to more speeches, & myself made one! I wrote a review of Loisy's little book for the 'Literary Supplement' of the "Times": but it was a poor piece of work of which I am half–ashamed. This afternoon I ordered that the curfew should be suspended, and the clock–chimes silenced as a protection against Zeppelins.

I attended Evensong.
