396th day

A beautiful autumnal day from beginning to end. I spent the morning in correcting proofs, & in making various attempts to prepare a sermon for the Canterbury Huguenots. I attended Evensong in the Cathedral, and afterwards took Miss Heather Nepean for a walk in the Banks. She knows Russia, & has family connexions with that people. Presumably, therefore, some credit may be given to her assurance that many of the Russian troops are armed only with clubs. When the War began, most of them believed that they were fighting against England. Only by degrees did they realise that, not Englishmen, but Germans were the enemy! The Charnwoods arrived about 5.30 p.m. I took him for an hour's walk before dinner. Hughes came to dine, and after dinner sang some songs. Miss Nepean obligingly accompanied him. Caröe arrived about 10.45 p.m.
