388th day

I have been reading Farnell's 'Higher aspects of Greek Religion'. It is most informing and suggestive. The admirable English version of 'J'accuse' arrived at lunch–time, absorbed me for the rest of the day. It has the charm and power of a great Tragedy. If only it could be distributed in Germany, it could not but open men's eyes. But not while the amazing succession of victories in the East continues. The Germans are blind, drunken. Beyond the enormous casualty lists from the Dardanelles, and a vast amount of compliment to the new armies, we give no signs of effort. I attended Evensong, and walked with Logic through Houghall Wood.
