The receipt of various papers from the "Church Reform League" containing the announcement that that mischievous society was planning a public commemoration of the 700th anniversary of Magna Carta in the interest of their agitation for 'self–government', determined me to seize the opportunity provided by my sermon to the 'Churchman's Union' on June 10th to deal with the subject of 'The Liberty of the Church'.

Ella & I motored to Sunderland, where we lunched with General Kelly & his wife. Major Ridgeway, returned on sick leave from the front, was there, & gave some interesting details of his experiences. Canon Gouldsmith & his wife were also there. We had a lively discussion of the drink question. After lunch the General shewed us the preparations for coast defence. Many of his guns had been recently removed, and sent to the Dardanelles.
