I read the naïve yet illuminating pages of Roger de Wendover. His picture of 'our king John' is not attractive – a very thorough–paced villain of a man. I attended Evensong, & walked with Logic. Fawkes arrived about tea–time, & we walked to the Observatory, but the clouds spoiled the view. Gee, Knowling, Cruickshank, & Lillingston came to dinner, & we had much conversation.
