200th day

We motored to Newcastle, and there dined with Hadow, before going to the "Lit. & Phil" rooms in order to take part in a meeting organized in the interest of the Victoria League. The Lord Mayor (a Papist) presided, & there was an assembly of about 70 persons of the academic–respectable type, some knitting! I made a speech about the British Empire, and Hadow followed with another on the Victoria League. The proceedings were concluded within an hour: & then we motored back to Durham.
