I had much talk with Clarence on the many subjects on which he is keen, walked with him, & took him to dine at the Castle. Here was a pleasant party – Gee with Quirk & Cruickshank as his guests, myself & Clarence, & the chaplain. Our talk was fast & furious round the venerable mahogany of that glorious common–room. Returning to the Deanery, Clarence read aloud Halifax's Character of Charles II, an admirable piece: & then we talked on till long after midnight on the mighty & embarrassing theme of Religion.
