179th day

Jim went off to his new appointment in Ireland. After Mattins I took Ralph for a walk. As it threatened rain, I borrowed an umbrella from Captain Apperley. After lunch I attended a meeting of the Relief Committee. There is trouble brewing at Houghton–le–Spring. I had an interview at his own request with a Mr Riley. His 'business' (poor fool!) was to beg for the living of Ancroft! Then I wrote letters, & sent at the editor's request, a sermon for 'The Challenge'. Ralph and I dined with Gee at the Castle. There were present besides our host & ourselves only Jevons, the History Professor from Newcastle, & a young unknown parson. We had much vivacious & interesting discussion. Ralph expressed his envy of the society which Durham provided.
