Ella, Jim & I motored to Low Fell, and there lunched with Colonel & Mrs Doyle. It was an agreeable meal, tolerable meats washed down with bad champagne, & an abundance of goodwill. Jim and the officers turned out to be old comrades. On our way home I left cards on Major Murray, & the Colonel of the Troops billeted in Chester–le–Street. Then I attended Evensong in the Cathedral.
