Kennett left by the 10.29 train. I worked all day at my wretched lecture on "The Fire of London as seen by Contemporaries", and delivered it in the rooms of the "Lit: & Phil:" at Newcastle in the evening. Ella & Mrs Kennett accompanied me in the car. There was a very large attendance: they listened with patience & applauded with propriety. I spoke for precisely 64 minutes. Beyond attending Evensong in the Cathedral, I rendered no dutiful service.
