117th day
A warm wind from the south with a deluge of rain ushered in the day. I was interrupted at my work by a visitation of two ladies who came to induce me to attend a meeting for the Women's Emergency League, another of the war–created philanthropies, designed to organize employment, notably toy–making for women of the middle class now thrown out of employment. They returned at tea–time, & accomplished their object. Cruickshank and I walked together during the afternoon: & on our return attended Evensong in the Cathedral. My mind now runs on another kind of sermon for Oxford altogether: & I actually chose the text!
