66th day
Both yesterday and today I have been hampered by a bad head–ache, probably due to the weather. Instead of attending Evensong, I went for a long walk in the vain hope of righting myself. That strange creature Bain is not forgetful of his friends. This morning I received from the publishers a weird pretty piece – "A Syrup of the Bees", translated from the original MS. by F. W. Bain. It is adorned by a very characteristic preface.
Spooner told me on Sunday that the Fees for shewing Canterbury Cathedral amounted to no less than £1600 per annum. This is a welcome addition to an insufficient endowment.
On Sunday afternoon Spooner took me to see Carr, whom I had not seen for 34 years. He began my preparation for Confirmation, which was completed by Fry, a curate of Christ Church, Ramsgate. Carr was a very High Churchman: Fry was a very Low one. Their combined instructions left me neither the one nor the other.
