Tuesday, August 11th, 1914.
We had a crowded and enthusiastic meeting of citizens in the Town Hall, presided over by the Mayor. It was symptomatic of the times that old John Wilson, the Labour member, attended and spoke, as well as Hill, the sitting member, who is a Tory. I made a ten–minute speech which aroused much enthusiasm. Between 200 and 300 names were handed in at the close of the meeting.
Ella made a start with a ladies work–party, 28 responded to the summons, & stitched with much zeal.
The Germans have entered Liège; but the forts are still unconquered.
Nothing is announced from the sea beyond the sinking of a German submarine.
