9th Sunday after Trinity, August 9th, 1914.

At 9.30 a.m. Colonel Doyle brought 400 Artillerymen to a special service in the Cathedral. The singing of the hymns was very vigorous, and to me at least extremely moving. Indeed I had hard work to master my emotion. However I managed to preach a short sermon on the words: "Suffer hardship with me as a good soldier of Christ Jesus". The men sang "God Save the King" with much fervour before leaving the Cathedral.

Ella & I walked to the Goods Station in Gilesgate, & saw a number of infantrymen leaving Durham for Sunderland.

Later we called on the Colonel's Wife at the County Hotel. Mrs Doyle is a Dane, & has but just returned from Denmark after an exciting journey.

At dinner an evening paper was brought in to us. It reports a great French Victory in Alsasce, & the capture of Mulhausen. Also that the German forces have retreated from Liege, having suffered great loss & discredit.
