Wednesday, August 5th, 1914.

The papers carry the fateful tidings that Great Britain declared war against Germany in defence of the independence of Belgium. We decided to return home at once so as to be on the spot in case of any emergency. We travelled by way of Carlisle, and reached Durham about 3 p.m.: the stations swarmed with Territorials & Reservists in the process of being mobilized.

The Germans have declared war against Belgium, & are threatening an invasion of Holland!
